MacRumors, a tech media outlet, published a blog post today (September 2) reporting that the macOS 27 Golden Gate beta will exhibit a stronger glass-like visual effect on some high-end OLED displays.
Liquid Glass is a visual design feature in macOS Golden Gate that simulates the look and feel of glass through translucency, reflection, and layering.
Broadcasts developer Steven Troughton-Smith posted an update on the mastodon platform yesterday, stating:
macOS 27’s Liquid Glass design significantly enhances HDR-based highlight effects, an effect that can only be experienced on high-end HDR displays or OLED displays.
If you’re using an older monitor, you’ll miss out on a major highlight of the operating system’s design, so I decided to explore it in depth. Any “glass effect” or “vivid text” view automatically applies HDR highlights, and the effect is stunning.

Previous reports indicated that Apple planned to launch a new MacBook Pro with an OLED display as early as the beginning of 2027, and the name “MacBook Ultra” also appeared in market rumors.
Based on this, the report speculates that the Liquid Glass adjustments in macOS Golden Gate may be a software adaptation that Apple is preparing for future OLED laptops.
