Despite Player Exodus for Lost Starship Marathon, Bungie Remains Committed to Long-term Operation

Bungie Studios’ Starship Marathon failed to meet the studio’s expectations in its first month. While the game surpassed 1 million copies sold, this figure is dismal for a high-budget AAA long-running service title, especially considering the overall industry landscape.

Tech Free Press noted that Starship Marathon lost nearly 80% of its players on Steam, and also fell out of the top 100 on the Xbox game popularity charts. Despite this, Bungie has demonstrated a strong commitment, reiterating its long-term support for the game and stating it will not easily abandon this new extraction shooter.

In an interview with GamesRadar, Julia Naldin, creative director of Starship Marathon, reiterated that Starship Marathon will not be shut down or removed from app stores, even if player numbers continue to decline. She stated that the team has already planned the game’s development vision and update roadmap for the next few years.

Naldin revealed that the official storyline has some initial ideas, but the final plan has not yet been finalized, and the future direction will take into account player feedback and preferences. This fully demonstrates that Bungie has already made long-term operational plans for Lost Starship Marathon for many years.

It’s worth noting that the number of staff currently involved in the development of Starship Marathon even exceeds the development team for Bungie’s Destiny 2, demonstrating the studio’s high level of commitment to the game. While the shooter itself possesses considerable potential, the continued decline in its player base remains a worrying sign.
