This generation of Xbox is suffering setbacks in several key markets worldwide, with sales of the Xbox Series consoles being severely impacted and its presence in Asian markets, including Japan, continuing to decline.
This is why many game developers have abandoned developing games for the Xbox Series X console, instead prioritizing compatibility with PlayStation 5 and Switch 2. A Japanese developer recently explained that due to sluggish market demand and insufficient console availability, small and medium-sized studios simply cannot afford the cost of porting games to Xbox.
The Xbox’s declining market presence is seriously changing how game developers worldwide perceive the brand. Many are now choosing to forgo porting Xbox versions, releasing titles only for PC and other platforms.
Tech Free Press noted that Japanese character and environment modeler Y-Koichi, while confirming that the game “Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin” is expected to have an Xbox sequel, also responded to players’ questions about whether the game will be released on the Xbox platform.
He further stated that despite his deep affection for the Xbox brand over the years, Edelweiss Studios simply could not afford the development costs of the Xbox version.
Y-Koichi stated, “We simply don’t have the extra financial resources to manage so many platforms. You see, even mainstream brick-and-mortar stores in Japan don’t stock Xbox consoles at all…”
Ultimately, given limited R&D resources, ignoring the sluggish market demand and offline distribution of Xbox and insisting on prioritizing platform adaptation is completely counterproductive. The vast majority of small and medium-sized independent developers face the same predicament, especially studios outside of Europe and America.
Currently, Xbox Series X|S consoles are virtually impossible to find in major physical stores in Japan, and players in other parts of the world are facing the same situation.
However, under the leadership of Asha Sharma, the upcoming “Project Helix” next generation of consoles is expected to change the perception of Xbox among players and game developers.
