Apple Music Won't Ban AI-generated Music

Apple Music released an open letter reiterating that it will not ban AI-generated music, but requires that the content be clearly labeled and must not mislead users or impersonate creators.

Apple Music released an open letter titled “What We’re Doing to Keep Music Fair,” explaining its AI music strategy to record labels and industry partners.

According to a blog post cited by Tech Free Press, Apple stated that AI-generated music accounts for “significantly less than 1%” of total plays on Apple Music. While this percentage is low, it has already fallen under the purview of platform governance.

Apple acknowledges that AI can help artists explore new forms of expression, but emphasizes the need for transparency and anti-abuse rules for such content. Apple accepts AI-generated music on its platform, but only if it doesn’t mislead listeners or impersonate a real creator.

In terms of specific measures, Apple Music launched AI content tagging support in March of this year, claiming to be the first global streaming service to incorporate this capability. Currently, some leading distributors have begun submitting this type of metadata, and it will become a mandatory requirement for all content providers in the future.

Apple has also developed internal tools to identify AI-generated content, focusing on fraud, spam, and impersonation. If Apple finds that most of the plays for an AI-generated song are due to traffic manipulation, it will automatically remove it from the App Store.
