AppleInsider published a blog post yesterday (June 22) reporting that Apple has added an Extend tool based on Apple Intelligence to the Photos app in iOS 27.
Apple further expanded the AI photo editing capabilities of iOS 27 by introducing the Extend tool, following Clean Up and Spatial Reframe, which adds new images outside the frame of a photo.
In terms of functionality, Extend relies on Apple’s intelligent image analysis to reasonably infer the external blank areas based on the entire image content, thereby generating new elements that look reasonable.
The media outlet tested a photo of a kitten perched on a windowsill. Using the Extend tool, Apple iOS 27 added extra curtains, more withered plants, and the window above the cat’s head, among other elements. The enlarged photo did not appear jarring. Tech Free Press has attached the relevant image below:

The media outlet also tested a night scene photo. The generated road bollards, poles, and traffic elements generally matched the scene, but there were some shortcomings, such as the slightly abnormal shape of the back of the road sign and the fact that the position of the pole was not completely aligned with the road layout.

In a photo of the stairs at an Apple Store in Rome, Extend added more steps and glass, making it visually plausible. The media outlet pointed out that when the original image lacks sufficient information, the AI-generated image differs from reality; for example, the image below actually shows a door, and no additional steps were added.
